I hope you’ve had a wonderful summer. Filled with family, picnics, and fun…. at least that was the plan at the beginning of summer. Wasn’t it? Now we’re nearing the end of summer and it’s Back-to-School time. I have mixed emotions because I always feel so over-scheduled. I wrote this little letter to moms, more as a reminder to myself.
This is the Post-It attached to my real paper calendar in my kitchen.
Dear Moms,
I just wanted to share my thoughts on August with you. Life is slower, friends are gone on vacation, the schedules are a bit fuzzy, the weather is hotter, and it may seem strange that school starting is just around the bend. You may be anxious to connect and fill your calendar to the top.
Let me be clear…
SEPTEMBER IS COMING!
Just because you’re feeling like your schedule is a bit empty right now, do not be tempted to fill up your calendar in September. I fall prey to this every year, even though I have this Post-It on my calendar (above). It’s a trap and this is why:
Sports practices are coming!
Scout meetings are ON!
Back to School Night is coming!
Church Groups start again (for moms and kids)!
HOMEWORK is coming!
Volunteering for all the things!
Every minute of every day is filled with SOMETHING. I’m not always quite sure what my days are filled with, but my husband and I just sat down to sync up our calendars and there is just a lot of stuff. Don’t get me wrong, I crave the structure and routine, but I long for the down time of summer.
Don’t forget, everyone still need to eat. I’m just sitting here shaking my head over this one. This whole business of three meals a day is just too much sometimes.
Take my word on this moms:
Life will get better in November.
DO make time for yourself. DO make a date with a friend. DO get back to the gym. Take it slowly and prioritize. At least that’s what I’ll be telling myself.
Thinking of you! Standing in Back-to-School solidarity with you mom!
Yours in over-scheduling,
Kristen
This is one of the truest sentences I’ve ever read – “This whole business of three meals a day is just too much sometimes.”
Now I have to go find a recipe for crockpot chicken. Thanks for this reminder!
Thank you for this reminder! My child is currently homeschooled but the call of fall activities reaches us, too. It’s definitely important for me to remember not to overschedule the coming months just because we have a breather right now.
