Looking for a special LEGO box to make for a special little builder in your life? Transform an unfinished wooden cigar box into a keepsake. Maybe you’re a grandparent and want to give your son’s old LEGOs to your grandchild, a box like this would be fabulous. It’s vintage-inspired.
Supplies:
- Wooden Cigar Box
- Black Acrylic Paint
- Wood Stain (I used Minwax Wood Finish Golden Oak)*
- Foam Brush
- Vinyl or contact paper
- Silhouette Electronic Cutting Machine
*We just purchased this stain at our local Home Depot. Here is a link to one online, the price is less expensive in stores.
Mr. Busy Kids was the master behind this project. I received a new-to-me Silhouette for Christmas and he has become the BOSS! Even my kids can make things, me… not so much.
He created this image to be printed out on the Silhouette. Here is the image he made if you would like to save and use it:
Once the vinyl was cut, I removed all of the inside pieces and placed in on (sticky side down) the wood. I carefully smoothed out all of the bubbles and made sure that each letter was sealed onto the wood. Then I painted the letters in smooth, continuous strokes. I didn’t dilute the paint.
Then I used black acrylic paint and a foam brush to paint over the letters. I tried not using the vinyl and silhouette and it was a complete fail. I thought I’d be able to paint a straight line; however, I cannot. The silhouette and vinyl made it a very simple task.
One the black paint dried (about 5 minutes), I pulled the vinyl off.
Then my son used a foam brush to apply a coat of wood stain, it’s very forgiving and little mistake can be made. I used an old sock as my rag to wipe up an excess stain. It took a few hours for the stain to dry, but the final product was worth the wait.
Love the look of these and they will look great stored anywhere: toy room, kids room, on a bookshelf, a shelf, a desk, a table. A great idea for a gift too:
This wooden LEGO box would make a great gift even for a Big Kid at heart. It’s a classic vintage toy box of sorts. This would also make a great grandparent gift or travel kit. Enjoy your wooden box!
