How To Make Colored Eggs For Easter
So, can you DYE BROWN EGGS?
If you’re looking for the quick answer – it’s YES! Yes, you can dye brown eggs!
Ready to jump in and try Dyeing Brown Eggs?
We have two techniques that we like. The first one involves using a standard egg dying kit and the other one is more like a science experiment. Fun for all!
These eggs will be referred to as eggs #1, #2, and #3 (left to right) |
1. Using An Egg Dyeing Kit
The first time we dyed the brown eggs we used an egg dyeing kit. Simply follow the instructions that come with the dyes.
What we learned about dyeing brown eggs with a kit:
- The eggs do take color after they sit in the vat of color for a long time! (8 minutes minimum)
- Yellow and Orange do not show up n brown eggs; however, if you do yellow first and then put it in blue – it makes teal (see egg #3 above).
- Rubberbands work great! (see eggs #1 and #3)
- We tried the “magic crayon” and you couldn’t see the marks. White crayons are sometimes fun to use on eggs because the wax from the crayon repels the dye.
- We also tried a glue gun (see egg #2) – you’re not seeing egg #4 because when we tried to take the glue off and the entire shell came off with it!
2. Dying Easter Eggs With Food Coloring
Brown Egg Dying Supplies:
- baking soda
- water
- vinegar
- food coloring
- syringe or medicine dropper or even a small cup
- cookie sheet to catch the mess
- paper towels
- foam brush or your finger (depends on how messy you want to be)
Directions (follow the photos above):
- Mix 2 Tablespoons of Baking Soda with a 1 tsp of water. Keep adding in more water until it is the consistency you like.
- Now “paint” your egg with the baking soda mix. Then drop food coloring directly onto your egg.
- Now clean it all off with a dropper full of vinegar. Watch the fizz! Repeat for more color.
- Pat the egg dry with a paper towel. Don’t wash it off (I tried that).
- Let it dry and then put it on display. Look how pretty it is!
Our Eggxciting Adventures in Decorating Eggs with Dye*
* Don’t do what I did!
I did my research and found that you could bake “hard boiled eggs”. Voila I thought! We’ll do half white eggs and half brown eggs.
- Does it work? Yes!
- Did my house smell like rotten eggs? Yes!
- Did the white eggs look like they had warts on them? Yes!
So I threw all of the white eggs away. GASP!
A Few Egg-teresting Facts
How do you tell if eggs are still good to use?
Place them in a large bowl and if they float to the top the eggs have gone bad. If they don’t they are good to use. You can use them after the expiration date if they pass the test!
Are white eggs bleached?
No, different breeds of chickens lay different colored eggs. Some even lay green, blue or speckled eggs.
How long do you boil eggs for coloring?
Until the cooked egg is firm. Usually about 10 – 12 minutes.
How do you dye eggs naturally?
You can make natural dyes from boiling strong colored vegetables. We didn’t try this and it may not work well with brown eggs.
Enjoy! It’s a lot of fun to decorate different eggs of all shapes and colors.

The brown eggs looks lovely!
WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!! Im speechless! It realy worked
We tried this but didn’t get the same results! All of the colors bled together when we put the vinegar over the colored egg. We thought maybe it was the ratio of baking soda to water that we used but we varied that and it still happened. Do you have any tips?
