Crystal Science Experiment
This Crystal Science Experiment is a super way to bring some STEM activities into the holiday. While we love Candy-Free Valentines, we have fun with hands-on experiments. For more Valentines Crafts click here. This crystal activity can be customized with different shapes and letters.
When we finally tried to jump into the Borax Crystal crafting pool, it was a total bust. Turns out I didn’t have the correct ratio of Borax to water. When we tweaked it just a little (directions below), it became our Crystal Heart Science Experiment.
There are a bunch of fun ways to use this craft for any project. My son even made a snowflake in 8th grade science class. Follow these simple ingredients and directions for great results:
Supplies needed for the Crystal Heart:
- Borax – sold by the box in cleaning aisle of stores
- Boiling water
- Glass container – I used an old vase, but Mason jars would work too
- Stick – anything you have works (pencil, chopsticks, ruler)
- String
- Pipe Cleaners
- Food coloring (optional) – we dyed our solution a little pink/red for the above results.
Simple Crystal Heart Science Experiment Directions:
- Make your design (heart) from pipe cleaners.
- Attach the pipe cleaner to a stick with a piece of string. This will allow the heart to dangle in the solution.
- Boil 1 point of water and mix it with 1/3 cup of Borax. Pour into tall glass container.
- Lower pipe cleaner design into the water mix. Let it stay for 3 hours or overnight.
- Remove, dry and display.
- Enjoy!

Great activity! Thanks for sharing!
Can you make multiples in the same jar?? I love this and want to do it with my class but I’d hate to try doing several in one jar and it mess up! Thanks!!
Sure! I don’t think I’d do it in a jar though. Maybe a deep pan or bucket with dowel rods across the top? That would work!
It says boil 1 point of water… should this be one CUP?
