Celebrate the Earth!

This is the last in the fingerprint art series!  I hope you enjoyed the heart and the dove… now here is the world!  This one was done with the others, but it was saved out for my Dad’s birthday.  Happy Birthday Grandad!


We followed the same directions from the Dove, except this time my sister’s family did the land and my family did the water.  The hardest part, was choosing the colors we wanted to use.

Supplies for Fingerprint Earth:

  • White Painter Canvas – We purchase this 3-pack of canvas since we were making several at one time.  I also liked it because they are thin and easy to frame.
  • Acrylic Paints – I like this 12 color basic set.  Remember you can mix colors to get the shade you want instead of purchasing multiple bottles of paint.
  • Black Sharpie Marker
  • Card stock, tape, and scissors
  • Just Getting Started –   this set has everything you need and is the least expensive I could find.

Directions for the the Fingerprint Earth:

TIP:  Make sure you give yourself plenty of time to let each person’s dry.  This could take several days to finish.

  1. On a piece of heavy weight paper, draw the earth design.  Use a basic world design.  I traced a mixing bowl to get the large circle.
  2. Cut out the circle and the continents.
  3. Tape down the outer circle and the continents.  Only the “water” will be showing on the canvas.  Paint.  Let dry.
  4. Remove the continents and fill in with land colors.
  5. Each person adds a fingerprint at the bottom in their color.  Let the color completely dry before signing.  For children, cover up the other space so it’s very clear where they’ll need to write.  You can even add a post-it note and tell them to write above it.

There were 5 Fingerprint projects total:

  • The heart traveled almost 3000 miles (by mail) for my grandmother’s birthday.
  • One bird stayed with my sister’s family.
  • One bird came back to my home.
  • One bird and the world went to my parent’s home

Overall, it was a great project…. I’m happy it’s done, but it’s fun to know that we all have them in our homes!
