Are you looking for ways to help your child with handwriting?  You’re not alone!  I’ve talked to several moms recently who are looking for ways to help their child’s writing and fine motor skills.

I consulted with an Occupational Therapist to see what kinds of tips she had for elementary age kids struggling with writing.

One thing that always surprises moms is that writing starts from the larger muscle groups and the “upper trunk” or core muscles. Children today have weak core muscles due to more technology time and less outdoor time.   Bottom line:  improve your child’s large muscles (gross motor) skills and it will also improve their handwriting (fine motor skills).

The 5 Basics of Handwriting include:

  1. Visual Motor Skills
  2. Visual Perception
  3. Fine Motor Skills
  4. Trunk Control
  5. Shoulder Stability

A child needs all 5 of the above in order to be ready to write!

Does your child need more help with legible writing?

They need to work on:

  1. Letter Formation
  2. Letter Spacing
  3. Letter Alignment
  4. Letter Size
  5. Letter Slant

Remember:  Helping your child learn proper letter formation when they’re little, will save you in the long run!

For younger kids, check out Handwriting Without Tears.  If you’re child is struggling with grip, make sure to check out the post on how broken crayons can help fix grip issues.

If you’re child needs extra help on their letter placement, make sure to check out my “house” story here.  It really does work!
