Sneaky Math with Scrabble
Family Game Night with some deceptively educational math. I love games that bring the entire family together, but Scrabble is truly my all time favorite. Math practice is not always fun: math “problems”, math worksheets, flashcards, skill programs, etc. So, we solved this problem by doing a little sneaky math with one of our most favorite games.
We’ve been trying to plug away on our Summer Points or maybe you’re doing DIY Summer School. Our kids do better if the math seems to be authentic – like adding up your score in Scrabble! (see below)
How to squeeze in some Sneaky Math with Scrabble:
We like to set up the Scrabble game (borrowed my parent’s super deluxe edition) in the dining room. Then (to keep my sanity), we set the timer and play for about 15 minutes a night.
We made our kids “in charge” of the score keeping. One kid for mom and one for dad. Brilliant! They have to do the adding, doubling the points, etc. For us, it’s much more fun then more worksheets.
Scrabble is also a winner because it involves spelling, dictionary skills, strategy, and problem solving skills.
I’m not trying to *brag* – but I am the reigning SCRABBLE CHAMPION in my house! 🙂
What kind of fun things to you do for fun math in your house?
Ha – I also tend to win all the games in our house. It drives my husband crazy. 🙂 Great ideas in here!
