My friend, Miriam, used the smart amusement park trick of “everyone wear the same brightly colored shirt” (see picture on page 1).   Not only is that smart, but LEGOLAND California employees liked their shirts and even gave them free trinkets to recognize their efforts!  Would you like to make this shirt yourself?  Click here.   They rocked their shirts!

Other Clothing tips for Amusement Parks:  Miriam also recommends that everyone wear zip off quick-drying pants for runs through water fountains and water rides. A great way to get wet, cool off, and dry fast.  As an East Coast girl, I wan’t prepared for how intense the sun is in California.  I wore this great cool black hat, my kids wore these wide brimmed hats, and we love these sandals for their tennis shoe like bottom and toe.

This is the face pattern we used.  Click here for stencil. We omitted the white dot – may have to go back and do that!

Directions for LEGO t-shirt:

1. Print out the pattern (with above template) on the computer.  Resize if needed to fit your child (or adult) proportionately.
2. Trace onto freezer paper and cut out inside.  Make sure you do not cut outside of the lines.  You need to poke a hole with your scissors and work from the inside out.
3. Iron the freezer paper onto the shirt with shiny side down.
4. Place a piece of cardboard inside the shirt where you’ll be painting so that the paint doesn’t leak through.
5.  Paint (I worked from the outside edge in), my shirts took 2 coats of paint.
6. Wait until dry (if you can) and peel off!  Easy as pie!

I used a separate stencil for each shirt.  I think I had the entire shirt done – tracing, cutting, ironing, and painting done in 30 minutes.  Yahoo!

Where can you purchase freezer paper?  Your grocery store should have in the same section as plastic wrap and aluminum foil.

Background story:

I really wanted to make these shirts for my kids before we left on our big airplane trip.  Did I?  Sort of…. we left for the airport right after a severe storm and tornado warnings.  We were told that we wouldn’t be able to fly out that night and would have to return in the morning.  Bummer….to…….Bonus:  I came home to a clean house and all of my things were already packed!  So, I could start the shirts!  Finally, I could find 30 minutes to get them done!  That’s all it took!  They dried overnight and the boys were thrilled to wear them the next day when we flew out!  Additional bonus, I was able to find the kids wherever we went.
