Do you enjoy using Essential Oils? Maybe you’re interested in getting your teen onboard because you’ve learned about the benefits. Fortunately, I have a Teen Expert here today to share her experiences with essential oils. Meet Julia, she’s a real life teenager and agreed to write this piece for Busy Kids Happy Mom. She even included the research and links. I was blown away by her diligence and thoroughness.
Just to give you a little background (her bio is at the bottom), Julia is 14 years old and wants to have a career as an architect. She enjoys interior design and math. I met her at a doTERRA workshop and was impressed by her ability to share her knowledge about oils. Not only was she comfortable with adults, but she also takes her travel pack of oils wherever she goes. She’s educating teens all around our area about the benefits of oils. Take it away Julia…….
Inside a Teenage Girl’s Life of Essential Oils
Everyone knows that one little child who is always complaining about a tummy ache or has heard of pets who are terrified of thunderstorms. “Just give the child an antacid,” says one person. “Just give the dog an anti-anxiety prescription,” says another. But what if there was a way to help that loved one (human or furry!) naturally? There is: Essential Oils. These naturally occurring, volatile aromatic compounds are found in the seeds, bark, stems, roots, flowers, and other parts of plants. They can be both beautifully and powerfully fragrant. In addition to giving plants their distinctive smells, essential oils protect plants and play a role in plant pollination. In addition to their intrinsic benefits to plants and being beautifully fragrant to people, essential oils have long been used for food preparation, beauty treatment, and health care practices. Beauty
While Pinterest-browsing one day, I found a pin that listed 50 different uses for Lavender Essential Oil. One of these uses was to enhance your makeup. By adding a drop or two of Lavender Essential Oil to your mascara, your eyelashes grow noticeably longer in a matter of weeks. Another use for essential oils in your beauty routine is for a DIY lotion and lip balm. By combining a few other ingredients and a couple drops of essential oil into an empty lip balm container, you have just made your own lip balm. The recipe for essential oil lotion is much simpler. All you have to do is buy some unscented lotion, squirt some into your hand, and add a drop of your favorite Essential Oil (my favorites are a blend called Serenity for sleep and Grapefruit for waking up in the morning). Rub in and enjoy.
Skin
It’s never fun when the occasional zit pops up, but in a teenager’s case, that happens all the time. The best oils I have found when you have an unsightly pimple are Geranium, ClearSkin (a blend of essential oils from doTERRA), and Melaluca (also known as tea tree oil.) When I first started using Essential Oils for my daily skin care routine, I used Geranium and it worked like a charm. A while after I had started to use Geranium, I noticed that it started losing its effectiveness. So, I switched over to ClearSkin. When the same thing happened with ClearSkin, I switched over to Melaluca (which is what I am using now). I learned that the best formula to use is to rotate your oils (that’s why so many oils can work for the same things). Melaluca is my favorite zit remedy and works the best by far.
Studying
A study that had taken place in 2011 by students at St. Lawrence University shows that chewing a certain flavor gum while studying and then chewing that same flavor of gum while taking a test can help you retain information during the test. We found that the study applies to Essential Oils too. My favorite blend for studying is InTune by doTERRA. InTune is a blend of Amyris Bark, Patchouli Leaf, Frankincense, Resin, Lime Peel, Ylang Ylang Flower, Hawaiian Sandalwood Wood, and Roman Chamomile. By themselves, these oils help with focus, calming, and motivation. When put together they are a true studying marvel.
Sleep
My all-time favorite blend to diffuse while sleeping is Lavender and Wild Orange. Even non-essential oil users know that Lavender helps with sleep and is very calming; however these non-essential oil users don’t use wild orange which is also greatly beneficial to sleep. Wild Orange is uplifting and can help calm racing or negative thoughts that may cause you to not fall asleep as quickly. For me, Wild Orange and Lavender is the perfect combination for a good-night’s sleep.

Well written post, Julia! I did not know about Wild Orange but have always loved the scent. I’m going to have to try that out for better rest. Thanks for sharing your experience with it.
Thanks for commenting Shannan. I think you’d love Wild Orange – it’s also known as “Sunshine in a bottle.” GREAT stuff!
I am so excited to share this with my 12 year old daughter. Thank you so much for such a detailed and spot on post. I imagine we will be making a trip to Whole Foods to get some oils after she reads this. Thank you again.
Thanks Allison – Using Essential Oils is such a natural way to take care of all those hard parts of being a teenager.
Awesome information that I am anxious to try with my teen. Thanks, Julia!
So much to learn – right Liz?!
What a great list Kristen – pinning for later!!
Thanks Melissa – using Essential Oils is not just for teens. I seem to need something everyday! For my “teen” body. 🙂
Great information, Julia!! And so well written! I’m sure there will be lots of teens ready to try your tips after reading this post. And I love wild orange and lavender, too!! 🙂
Thanks Kerry! Didn’t Julia do a wonderful job? She is so knowledgeable. I have a lot to learn!
Thank you Julia and Kirsten. I am going to give some essential oils to my 15-year-old niece for Christmas. I love your suggestions, and she’ll believe them more coming from another teenager! 🙂 How do you suggest she apply the oils for skin care and zits? Should the essential oil be mixed with a carrier or applied directly? Her skin is dry — except where it is oily.
Thanks!
Hi Ann – Thanks for reading and asking a question. I’m not a doctor, but this is what has worked for us: Mixing the lavender and melaleuca with witch hazel in a spritzer bottle. A little oil goes a long way. Coconut oil is great for moisturizing and has antibacterial properties. Application can be with a roller bottle or spray bottle. Hope this helps!
Thanks! The tips are helpful. Having a few options is nice to find the one that works best for her. Also, my mom loves the lavender and orange blend Julia suggested.
What a great article by a very smart young lady! I will definitely have to try the lavender/orange combo. I am hoping to ease my Tween daughter through puberty with the help of essential oils, she is a believer in them and like Julia is eager to learn more about all the different uses and how they can help her. I am so happy that I found your website! I found it through searching “essential oils for teen girls” and I look forward to exploring around. Thank you!!
Thanks for stopping by Jennifer! Julia is a gem. I was thrilled to have her write about her oil usage. If I can be of anymore help, please let me know.
Great post!! You gave a lot of information which I wasn’t aware at all like Geranium and Melaluca are the best oils for pimples. This is so helpful.
Everyone wants to be fit and want to look beautiful. And, essential oils can be the best solution for teen girls.

This is great information but please remind readers that essential oils are toxic to pets. They can get dangerously ill if they come in contact with these oils.
