“For Halloween this year, I’d love to make a knight’s costume,”  my son said.  “And I really want to have a full suit of knight armor.

WHAT?!

Fortunately, despite my initial reservations, I found inspiration and a great shortcut for this awesome DIY kid’s knight helmet via How-Lun Chen, founder and creator of Crafteeo.  Thank you Pinterest!

What is Crafteeo?

Crafteeo is an amazing Dad-made company that sells DIY kits for cardboard helmets, swords, and cardboard knight armor!

Can you believe that the helmet above is made out of only cardboard?

After watching their video (click here) and exploring Crafteeo’s  awesome website,  my son chose the deluxe Crimson Line Helmet.  The knight helmet kit came with the pieces pre-cut, the light, and paint.  Since the kit is made of cardboard, it allows you to modify it and add or subtract pieces as you see fit.

Crafteeo also sells the plans to make the helmets separately, but I’m so glad our kit came pre-cut!  It saved so much time!

 “Let’s create more!”

This was a very intricate project for my son (age 12) to complete.  He took several days, working at least an hour each time to complete it.  He took so much pride in creating his masterpiece, that he didn’t want to rush it.  My husband and I were able to help along the way as well.

Parent tip 1:  I did hold pieces in place while they were glued and my husband helped my son figure out where the pieces should be placed.  Think model building.  I also helped with the pieces right around the face.

Customizing The Knight Helmet

My son liked the way the spray paint looked on the glue residue, so I helped him by adding extra glue around the face where the corrugated cardboard ended.  It help enhance the shine.

Parent Tip 2:  I’d also have your child practice with a glue gun before they dive into the project.  Click here for glue gun tips with kids.

Using the cardboard allowed him to customize the kit and add a few additional pieces to the knight helmet.   It also allowed him to customize the DIY knight helmet to his size.  My son is so inspired, now he’s currently working on a chest plate too!

I love that this project impressed my tween and exposed him to more types of creating…

Make sure to check out Crafteeo for your kids. You can purchase templates and kits (what we used).  I know you will love the project as much as we did!

Disclosure: We reached out to Crafteeo and were sent a kit to try.  We were not compensated by Crafteeo.  I would have purchased it regardless!  First of all, this DIY knight helmet project for all of my son’s expectations for an awesome helmet.  Second, he loved learning about Mr. Chen and was inspired by his story.

Finally, we are partially on our way to a Halloween knight’s costume!
