Have you ever had a project that when you’re finished with it, you just adore? I love making things for others and I actually don’t keep much of it for myself. This project was different. I knew exactly what I wanted, where I wanted it to be placed, and the colors I wanted it to be. This wall art project incorporates something new and something old, a family favorite scrabble game, into SCRABBLE WALL ART with a magnetic scrabble board.
Scrabble Wall Art
I’m so excited to share this DIY project with you! This is my most favorite one to date. I love this simple scrabble wall art because it looks lovely in the home, promotes reading and spelling, it’s not electronic, and the entire family can enjoy it together.
I’ve made similar magnetic boards with Scrabble letters, but used vintage dictionary pages. I waited and waited on one to make for my house, because I wanted to have it in our main hallway. When I found this awesome round frame at Home Goods, the process began. While other projects stand out to guests, this Scrabble Wall Art gets the most attention.
I wish I could tell you that this was a fast project, but it has many, many steps. I worked on this project over 6 months due to life, kids, weather, commitments, etc. I know you understand! It really could be done in a weekend. I think if I was making this to give or sell I would have worked faster too.
Magnetic Scrabble Board Supplies
- Frame
- Elmer’s Spray Adhesive
- Linen Fabric
- E6000
- Glue Gun
- Scrabble Letters – I used our 50 year old family set. This is the set I played on as a child. Wooden tiles are best. There are 100 tiles in a game.
- Rare Earth Magnets (100 small)
- Metal Sheet – I ordered mine from Home Depot here. You should be able to purchase it in store.
How To Make Your Scrabble Wall Art
- Frame – I looked high and low and found this round frame at Home Goods. It had nice art work in it too. I carefully cut it out in case I want to use it for something else in the future.
- Metal – I used metal cutters to cut my sheet of metal to fit the frame. Then I spray painted it with white primer. This just helps to dull the metal so it doesn’t shine silver through the fabric.
- Linen Fabric – I used Spray adhesive to attach the fabric to the metal. Make sure you’re downwind of the spray glue. I’m speaking from experience. Then I used a Glue Gun to attach it into the frame. No one sees the back, so I didn’t do anything fancy with it. If you’re giving it as a gift, cover the back with brown kraft paper.
- This is what it looks like now in my house. Picture #1 is the before and picture #4 is the after.
- Use E6000 glue to attach your Rare Earth Magnets to the Scrabble Letters.
How To Play Wall Scrabble
- Use as many letters as you can!
- No limit on the length of word. Go for a big one!
- Don’t remove someone else’s word until it’s time to clear the board.
Sometimes we do themes. Right now it’s Thanksgiving.
We’ve done Halloween, Christmas, sports, school, knights, birthdays, holidays, and LEGOS… whatever we’re into at the time. Most of the time we just walk by and add a new word if we have time. Above all, have fun!
If you’re looking for a smaller board, I have made a knock-off Ballard Designs magnet board too. I’ve also used Scrabble Letters to make cool ornaments.
This would retail for over $100, so if you make it as a gift, don’t underestimate the value of your work. I’d love to know if you make a Magnetic Scrabble Board too.

What a great use for those letters. I keep hoping to find a scrabble game at a yard sale to do a fun project like this, but no luck so far. Love it! just pinned!
Such a fun idea! Love it. Great job.
Oh I like this. What a fab idea 🙂
So clever! Great gift idea.
That looks awesome! I am going to make it this weekend. Can you estimate how big your frame is? I love the sizing of it. Going to go check out Hobby Lobby and HomeGoods to see if I can find something similar! Such a cute idea- thanks for posting.
Wonderful DIY and looks cool 🙂
